Victor Sjöström directs this striking social drama based on the 1906 play by Nils Krok. About a wife and mother who, when her husband becomes ill and dies, is forced into the workhouse and must see her children given away to foster care. This film influenced a great debate in Sweden about social security and helped lead to changes in the laws governing such workhouses.
