In the 20s, he was among the leading directors of the 'Thomas Ince' studio, which included the melodrama Human Wreckage (1923), which was a probe into drug addition sparked by the demise of actor Wallace Reid, and the first version of Eugene O'Neill's Anna Christie (1923) starring Blanche Sweet.
