Rambling tramp and decorated war veteran Slag just happens to rolls into his hometown after many years away and has a chance encounter with a scrappy newsie kid that turns out to be his own son! The discovery motivates Slag to steal funds so he can send his son to the local military academy but he is careful to keep his influence and relation hidden even as he takes a job at the academy's stable.
